The restoration of the facade of the Colegio de San Ildefonso of the University of Alcalá de Henares, executed by Kalam, has been recognized with a Special Award from the Casas Históricas y Singulares Foundation which was presented last December 13 at a ceremony held in the Liria Palace of Madrid.
This building, initially built at the initiative of Cardenal Cisneros in 1537, is one of the best known works of Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón, built in Vellón limestone in “Cisneros Style”, also called “plateresque” or a transition style, with a mixture of styles from the Gothic to the Renaissance.
The jury highlighted the technical quality of the execution and the final result. They also stressed the great dissemination of the work, installing a scaffold so that the public could access to see the facade up close during a program called “Open works”.
The work has made it possible to understand the importance and extension of the surface treatments to protect the stone and the color intonations applied to the facade since the sixteenth century. This intervention has also won the prestigious Europa Nostra Award in the conservation category in 2018.
From Kalam we want to congratulate all the team of professionals that, working all together, made this recognition come true.
