Bank of Spain, Madrid, Spain

Over ten years after our first intervention on the Bank of Spain headquarters, listed as a cultural heritage asset, KALAM again enjoyed the owner’s confidence for the restoration of 12,000 m2 of facade of Alpedrete granite, Alconera limestone, and Carrara marble, corresponding to the main building and its 1975 extension. This restoration, planned by Valentín Berriochoa, included the securing of stone cornices and modillions with stainless steel bars and epoxy resins, removal of oxidized ties that had caused ashlars to split, micro-stitching and sealing of cracks, pointing of ashlar masonry and restoration of volumes with epoxy mortar, elimination of blooms, pre-consolidation and application of patinas and anti-graffiti treatments on the facade walls, and fitting of zinc on cornices with the Belgian jointing system. Wrought-iron elements on the lower floors, grillwork in the English courtyard, facade lamps, and zinc cresting were also restored.
