San Ildefonso University College, Alcalá de Henares, Spain

Restoration of the facade of the College of San Ildefonso at the University of Alcalá de Henares. Begun by order of Cardinal Cisneros in 1537, this is one of the best-known works by Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón, built in Vellón limestone in the ‘Cisneros style’, also known as Plateresque or Transitional, containing a medley of styles from Gothic to Renaissance. Our work included cleaning, consolidation, extraction of salts, restoration of volumes with stone and mortar, restoration of ironwork and joinery, and protection of cornices with zinc. The excellent work by our practitioners led to this restoration being rewarded with an EU Cultural Heritage Award bestowed by Europa Nostra in 2018 in the Conservation category, as well as the Casas Históricas Foundation Special Award in 2017.
