San Clemente Convent, Toledo, Spain

San Clemente is one of the convents that arose in Toledo after the Reconquista, founded outside the city walls by Alfonso VI and later moved inside the walls by his grandson Alfonso VII. It is a complex with seven courtyards and cloisters, most notably the processional cloister, and hosts one of the city’s most significant ensembles of ceramic tiling. Commissioned by the Toledo Heritage Consortium, this restoration, part of a comprehensive rehabilitation plan that has been in progress for years, included the refurbishment of dwellings and involved work on roofs and facades and certain interiors, such as a hall with a 16th-century Mudéjar wooden ceiling, Islamic plasterwork, and mural ornamentation.
