Emperador Hotel, Madrid, Spain

Restoration of the facades of this hotel on Madrid’s well-known Gran Vía, designed and built in 1947 by the brothers Julián and Joaquín Otamendi, creators of various other of the city’s architectural landmarks. Missing portions in jambs, lintels, and belt courses were restored with special restoration mortars and fiberglass bars. Dilapidated balusters, moldings, and ornamental motifs were renewed, cast by our practitioners in our architectural reproduction workshop. The walls were cleaned, made water-repellent, and coated with silicate paint, with damaged ceramics being replaced and chromatically blended. On the ground floor the granite facade was bush-hammered and on the mezzanine a faux granite coating was applied with special pigmented resins. All terraces and balconies were taken up and weatherproofed, and protrusions, belt courses, and cornices were protected with zinc.
