Restoration by KALAM of this iconic palace in the heart of Santiago, which is to become the permanent headquarters of the Directorate of Libraries, Archives, and Museums as well as of the National Monuments Council. The plan of this palace is unique in Chile, organized around a gallery in the shape of a Latin cross, with a glazed ceiling and a cast-iron structure. It was declared a historic monument in 1981 and, despite the neglect of recent years, it still has significant remnants of the original plaster decoration along with the polychromy of its Neoclassical facades: ochers, whites, grays and damasks, hidden under subsequent coats of paint. Our work included consolidation and structural repairs, renovation of interiors, and restoration of the building envelope, with the participation of a large group of professionals and specialist restorers so as to adapt the building to its new use and restore this iconic palace to the public.
