Sigüenza Cathedral, Spain

This Cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary, patron saint of Sigüenza, was built on a Romanesque plan, with facades reflecting Gothic or French influences. With the form of a Latin cross, it has a high nave and two lower aisles in four sections, a crossing and a short transept, and a deep semicircular apse with a polygonal ambulatory. Here we carried out a phased masterplan for the Spanish Cultural Heritage Institute, starting with comprehensive rehabilitation work including treatment of damp with tunneled conduits, refurbishment of roofs, excavation and construction of damp cavities, repair of walls with drainage mortars, and restoration of the interior.

In a second phase we carried out, among other works, the integral rehabilitation of the Gothic cloister, with an archaeological excavation of the enclosure, the construction of chambers, the flooring of the pandas, the restoration of roofs, the drainage of the orchard and a new landscaping. In 2007, coinciding with the presentation of KALAM to the National Restoration Award, we published a book about this magnificent cathedral through EKABA. Another of the phases carried out included the recovery of annexes to the cloister to house the Museum of Tapestries of the Cathedral. To this end, the space was rehabilitated by demolishing later partitions, archaeologically excavating the area and covering it with a newly created coffered ceiling, providing the museum with new carpentry, electrical and lighting installations. In addition, an underfloor heating system was installed, as well as the restoration of the exterior walls and roof.
