Santa María Church, Ateca, Spain

Santa María de Ateca is a Mudéjar church with structural and decorative characteristics distinct from those of other such churches, with remarkable ceramic and brick decoration on its tower. Its oldest part dates from the 14th century, whereas the tower is earlier and was probably once the minaret of a mosque. KALAM was commissioned to restore the church by the Aragonese government. The roofs were wholly taken up so as to replace the original wooden structure, and finished with arched clay tiles. The walls were dried by means of vented drainage and a system of electric convectors that resolved the humidity problems.
